Using Speed Dating Techniques to Enliven and Improve Conferences and Workshops
You’ve probably heard of speed dating by now. It has so permeated Western popular culture that even those who aren’t looking for love know what it is. The concept was introduced to the American dating scene at the turn of the 20th century by Rabbi Yaacov Deyo and his wife, Sue, who founded their own service, SpeedDating. The service is based on an old Jewish tradition: helping young, single Jews meet others in the faith.
This tradition of creating a shidduch, or a match, called for Jewish singles to be kept in the dark about each other until the time for matchmaking came. Today, modern speed dating is still rooted in shidduch, but with formal dating services replacing the role of the Rabbi and his wife as matchmakers.
Our research tells us that a Los Angeles Rabbi called Yaacov Deyo invented speed dating in the late nineties as a way for young Jewish singles to meet and find a partner. It didn’t take long for speed dating to spread throughout the world as a revolutionary way for busy single people to meet each other without any of the stigma associated with traditional dating agencies. Speed Dating is still very popular in the United States and it has been said that more than a quarter of New York bars host a speed dating night at least once a week.
Speed dating is also known as speeddating, speed date or speed dating in certain quarters. The basic concept of speed dating involves an equal number of men and women attending a venue; each person spends between 3 and 10 minutes chatting to each member of the opposite sex. Each person then has to decide which people they would like to see again. The organisers facilitate an exchange of details if there is a match. The original format involved men sitting along one side of a long table with the women lined up along the other, every few minutes the men moving along one space.
Most speed dating services still operate according to this production line approach however Original Dating events in London and the UK have modified concept to give their clients more space and a generally more stylish environment. Click here for the Wikipedia article about speed dating.

Welcome to the world of speed-dating , where young singles can meet a prospective partner on a ‘dating conveyor belt’ that allows them three minutes to decide if this is Mr or Ms Right. You write down who’s hot and who’s not …’. Proponents of speed-dating argue that it only takes a few minutes to decide whether someone is romantically compatible, and that first impressions are usually permanent!
The original idea of speed-dating is based on an organised event in which a group of men and women are rotated to meet each other for no more than eight minutes. They are then forced to move on to the next person when the minutes are up. At the end of the session, they indicate whether they are interested in any of the individuals they have met, and if there is a match, contact details are forwarded between them. The idea reputedly has a scientific basis: eight minutes is allegedly more than enough time to determine whether the range of a mate’s hormones is complementary to your own, this being a key factor in so-called ‘first impressions’.
The speed-dating concept has been in existence since , and originates with a Los Angeles rabbi, Yaacov Deyo, who introduced the idea in his Jewish community, to help Jewish singles meet each other. The idea quickly spread outside of Jewish communities and across the United States, and in the following year reached London. The craze of speed-dating then took off rapidly in the UK with the establishment of dedicated websites e.
Media and online interest in the craze has rapidly spawned the derivatives speed dater for referring to participants, and speed-date as a compound verb.

Sunday was spent refining the plan, running through it several times to minimise risks or mishaps. We also had to make or buy other things we needed, like banners and a leaflet to hand out to people working in the office we planned to blockade. By early Monday morning we were off doing the action — and by Monday evening we were in the pub, debriefing and celebrating!
Having only taken part in a few actions previously, it was a truly fantastic experience — really empowering as well as being wicked good fun. It was amazing to know that we were a part of a series of actions taking place across the UK which challenged power, made the headlines, and fed into a long culture of resistance in the UK which has never been more necessary.
You could be linked up with them too. Our action support team will then help put you in touch with people who are on your wavelength. People have done it in past years consistently say it works amazingly, forming really powerful and long-lasting friendships for the future. However the obvious benefit is that this also helps form bonds of trust and friendship that will last, giving you a group of like-minded people to carry on taking action for climate justice well beyond the period of the camp itself.
It basically involves finding and getting to know some like-minded people to take action together, in whatever way suits your abilities and preferences. You want to do something artistic and creative? Or would you rather be involved in an office occupation, or some blockading involving a significant arrest risk? You will be offered options for actions you might want to take together.
